When Apple runs out a new iPhone, it’s always quick to point out that it’s much faster than last year’s iPhone or the models before that, if it does want to throw out most of the performance. Apple says iPhone 17 Professionals offer 40% more continuous performance than the iPhone 16 Pro. When discussing the AI performance of the iPhone Air, Apple estimates that in each neural accelerator located in five GPU cores, the A19 Pro has increased 3x in GPU peak calculations compared to last year’s A18 Pro.

But before he ended his performance on the iPhone Air, Apple’s Hardware Engineering SVP John Ternus gave us this unusual line: “This is the level of computing in the MacBook Pro in the iPhone, perfect for GPU-intensive AI workloads.”
This is the first time I’ve heard about the performance of iPhones compared to MacBooks. Of course, Tetanus doesn’t say which MacBook Pro he’s using for comparison, but it’s certainly a bold statement to skip the MacBook Air, or even the M4-powered iPad Pro, and then go straight to the most powerful MacBook.
The iPhone Air is equipped with the A19 Pro chip, and its 5-core GPU has a neural accelerator on each core to aid AI workloads.
Here are two things I have gained from this statement:

When it does arrive, Apple wants us all to know that the iPhone released today has the goods to perform device AI tasks for the new and improved Ai-Ai-Enhanced Siri.
2. We may see a MacBook in the coming year, rather than an M5 chip-based, but an A19 Pro. I doubt if we’ll see the Budge Book Book Book Pro apart from Apple’s latest M-series processors, but I won’t be surprised to see it Rumors $599 MacBook Air Get the A19 Pro.
A19 Pro Spec and Different Performance Propositions
First of all, the specifications of the A19 Pro chip:
In the iPhone Air and 17 Pro, the A19 Pro chip has a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, and a 16-core neuroengine. You can get extra GPU cores with the iPhone 17 Pro – it has a 5-core GPU with a 6-core GPU.

These are the same core specs (pardon the pun) as the A18 Pro — a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, 16-core neural engine — but Apple touted improvements to its chip architecture for the A19 Pro, including improved front-end bandwidth and branch prediction of the CPU’s two performance cores and a 50-percent increase in last-level cache size of the four efficiency cores. Pro moved to the second generation of Apple’s dynamic cache architecture and doubled its 16-bit floating point math performance, which is crucial for device AI.
There are two reasons why Apple has proposed different performance claims when introducing the iPhone Air and 17 Pro. The first is the extra GPU core on the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro. The second is the larger chassis of the iPhone 17 Pro’s more advanced cooling system, which allows the A19 Pro to run faster than in ultra-thin iPhone air, where it will surely perform the hot throttle effectively.
