firm

We rate and record two types of firmness: subjective and objective. When I tested the firmness, I lay on the mattress in every sleeping position and noticed the feeling of my back, stomach and hips. Our entire team is involved in this process to ensure a firm rating is not based on one body shape.

Objective firmness comes from our mattress crusher 9000. Not only is it an impressive orange color, it can scientifically rate the firmness of the bed based on the strength of a 160-pound person. Before the MS9K turn, we always make sure we test the bed to ensure our experience is fair.

Sports isolation

Movement isolation is how much the bed moves across the entire surface. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if you’re sleeping with another person or a furry friend, a poorly isolated bed can get you up at night.

To test exercise isolation, we did two things. First, I lay on the bed, closed my eyes, and my teammates moved on the bed next to me. I do this from every sleep position and evaluate how much exercise I’ve been feeling. Second, we do a water test, which involves placing a glass of water on the edge of the bed and rolling it towards it. If the water is around or when it is overturned, the bed will get a lower motion isolation score.

Edge support

If you are like me and tend to sleep on the edge of the bed or have mobility limitations, you know the importance of edge support. To test the strength of the periphery of the bed, we sat on the edge and slapped the coverage of the bed. If it feels like we may roll down or the edges crash under weight, there is no good edge support.

Many of the beds we like, such as the large fig, have strong edge support, which means you can go into the entire surface area of the bed to fall asleep.

temperature

All beds through our lab were tested in a temperature controlled room. Many brands claim their beds are cooling, but their performance is not restored. We are keen to make sure a bed is backed up on its claims. We examined the structure of the bed and relied on our first-hand experience to evaluate how it felt.
