Google is providing a major lifeline to students and amateur coders Gemini Code AssistantThe company said Tuesday it is a free AI coding assistant that supports all publicly available coding languages.
The Gemini Code Assistant, previously only for enterprise customers, will give everyone access to “almost unlimited” AI-encoding assistants, the company said in a press release. Gemini Code Assistant allows 180,000 completions per month, and Google says that’s 90 times more code completions from other free coding assistants on the market.
Ryan J. Salva, senior director of Google’s products, is responsible for the developer experience. “You have to be a very dedicated developer who codes 14 hours a day just to meet these limits.”
Google says Gemini Code Assistant has 128,000 input tokens supported in chats and can be used in natural language to help generate, interpret or improve code. For example, you could ask Gemini to write a script that sends daily emails with the latest weather forecast and gets viable code. However, the Code Assistant is not a newbie who can simply give Gemini Code Assistan a level of prompting and developing a fully-appearing program.
Salva sees 2025 as AI not only helps coders generate more code, but also helps code better code. It is common for developers to go through code reviews in software teams, where supervisors ignore their code and then give them tips on how to improve. Salva said AI agents in Gemini could help with this, freeing up more time for developers. Google will also have a public preview GeTHUB’s Gemini Code Assistance.
“We’ve built an AI agent that does the work of a teammate or colleague who reviews code that helps flaws,” Salva said. “Look for, ‘Do you follow best practices? [or] “Is there a way to make the logic more elegant?”
The release of Gemini Code Assistant, released by Google, was due to Big Tech’s rapid attempt to mark the field of AI dominance. Currently, Chatgpt is considered the default value of AI-assisted chatbots 400 million users per week. Some of Chatgpt’s successes have been linked to the virus launch at the end of 2022. It is considered a huge force of default technology. Salva said that by freely providing code assistants, the business case is to help drive lifelong adoption of Google AI services.
Aside from business cases, Salva sees Gemini Code Assistant as an important step in helping people start making programs in natural language, where coding knowledge is almost unnecessary.
“Large language models can write work that separate logic for you,” Salva said. “This makes humans more creative…it increases their creativity because they no longer have this language barrier.”
