All-female staff, including pop singer Katy Perry, briefly headed to the space for an 11-minute flight on Monday. The subsequent criticism lasted longer. And it keeps coming.
Lifestyle expert Martha Stewart released a video of her own 2007 zero-gravity flight on a Boeing 727 called G-Force One, using the title to quote a hit by Perry.
On a video of Stewart doing a zero-gravity flip, the title is: “Did you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting in the wind?” That’s the line from Perry’s first hit song Firework in 2010.
Stewart’s Instagram account also posted: “If you get out in 2007, Martha has been ahead of her time.”
Perry, writer and former journalist Lauren Sanchez, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, biological astronautics research scientist Amanda Nguy, film producer Kerianne Flynn and CBS host Gayle succeeded on Blue Origin NS-31 Flying This week.
The crew rolled to the launch pad of the Livia electric truck and took the elevator to board the crew capsule. Sanchez’s fiancé’s Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos personally escorted them to the Rockets. The flight lasted about 11 minutes. Perry sang a wonderful world during the flight, despite the choppy audio that made it sometimes hard to hear these women during the live broadcast.

Criticize and defend flights
Criticism even started before women took off. On the Today Show on April 3, actor Olivia Munn announced the event.

But women defend their flight.
“I won’t let you steal our joy, but most people are really excited and cheering us on and realizing what this mission means for young women, young girls and boys,” Kim said in a press conference after returning.
Aerospace engineer Bowe defended the scientific part of the trip.
“We are advanced science today,” Ball said. “More and more people will be able to do meaningful research in blue sources because we collect data. It’s not just plant biology – we look at human physiology, we contribute to the knowledge base people know about women. … We are now inspiring the world.”
