If you want to view the original source code of the startup MicrosoftBill Gates is sharing it now. On Wednesday, Microsoft co-founder posted it on his Gates notice Blog, recalling the early days of the company Its 50th anniversary. Gates wrote a lot of code in those five years, but he called it “the coolest code I’ve ever written.”
Gates shared a photo of himself holding a pile of paper, and he wrote that he was inspired by a copy of the January 1975 Popular Electronic Magazine. The magazine has a cover photo of the Altair 8800, a groundbreaking personal computer created by a small company called MIT.
The 19-year-old Gates and his Harvard University Paul Allen contacted the Altair creator and told them they had the basic version of the programming language of the chip that the Altair 8800 continues to use. Such software will allow people to program Altair.
“There is only one problem,” Gates wrote. “We don’t.”
Micro-Soft is born
Gates said he and his friends “coding for two months day and night to create software that we say already existed.” Gates and Allen then introduced the code to the president of MIT, who agreed to license the software. “Altair Basic became the first product of our new company and we decided to call it Micro-Soft,” Gates wrote. “We later gave up on the hyphen.”
As they say, the rest is software history. You can download 50 years old code From Gates’ post. “Computer programming has come a long way over the past 50 years, but I am still proud of the results,” he wrote.
