The previous one New England Patriots Kenneth Sims, the first pick, died Friday at the age of 65.

The defensive end underwent back surgery in 1987, which limited him to 12 games. The following season, in 1988, he ruptured the Achilles tendon and participated in only one game.

When the Sims were drafted in 1982, he became third Texas Longhorn Selected to select.
Sims came on the scene in his junior season after supporting future professional football Hall of Fame members Steve McMichael and Bill Acker during his sophomore season in Texas. Sims recorded 131 tackles and was named All-South Conference and All-American Champion.
As a senior, The Sims were once again named All Southern Conference and All American, in addition to becoming the first Texas Longhorn to win a Lombard Award.

The Lombardy Award was presented to the college football lineman, who best embodies legendary NFL head coach Vince Lombardi, focusing on role, discipline and excellence.
Also in his senior year, Sims was the top defensive voter for the Heisman Trophy after helping Texas with a 10-1-1 record and the 1982 Cotton Bowl title.
During his college career, the Sims had 322 tackles, 29 sacks, 50 tackle losses, 15 forced turnovers, 7 turnover recovery rates and 3 blocks.
