U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra announced Wednesday that he is running for governor, joining a crowded Democratic field in hopes of succeeding Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Bebera said he has been thinking about running for a while and decided to compete because of his experience with President Trump and managing the disaster, and he believes two characteristics are crucial to the state’s next leader.
“Looking at what is happening in front of us shows that it clearly shows that this is not the time to sit on the sidelines,” Becerra said in an interview.
He said his experience in dealing with natural disasters, especially the deadly 19009 pandemic, made him well suited to driving the man-made disaster caused by Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, the president’s top adviser because they are inseparable from cutting dangerously basic federal agencies and services.
“Americans are being punished, whether cancer patients no longer see this fruitful study completed, whether older people living in nursing homes, they will not let inspectors investigate the abuse of elderly people or see lead in toys that our children buy and keep in their mouths,” he said.
He said he believes California is at a tipping point and – apparently a scan of the state’s democratic leadership, requiring wise executive leadership to revitalize businesses and make wildfire victims in areas such as Pacific Palisades and Altadena easier to rebuild. While protecting the environment must remain a priority, laws such as the California Environmental Quality Act, the powers of the Coastal Commission and state regulations should be open for review, Becerra said.
The imminent problem in the game is Whether former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to runthis is a decision she didn’t make until summer. If she does compete, the move is expected to win the field for her national popularity, fundraising ability and her multiple campaigns that have been successful across the state.
Bebella said if Harris runs, he will continue to compete.
Other announced candidates Including the following Democrats: Gov. Eleni Kunalakis, State Controller Betty Ye, State School Director Tony Thurmond, Former Rep. Katie Porterformer Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragosa, former state Senate president Pro Tem Toni Atkins and businessman Stephen Cloobeck. Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is also operating.
Becerra joins another famous Latino Vilino, Villaraigosa, in a contest where Latino voting may be crucial. Bebelah said he believed in his qualifications and experience to speak for himself.
“I know who I am, what I do, I can tell people what I do, what I build, how to protect, what we achieve, and I feel comfortable with it,” he said. “It’s one of the things you’re trying to give people choices. That’s what elections mean.”
Becerra, 67, has been working in public office for 35 years. He served in the state legislature for two years before being elected to Congress in 1992. He eventually served 12 terms in the House and served as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-san Francisco).
In 2016, he was nominated by the then Gov. Jerry Brown became the state attorney general after being elected to the U.S. Senate. During his tenure as the state’s top attorney, he filed more than 120 lawsuits against Trump against Trump during his first term. Trump is expected to be the main focus of the governor’s race, and the state is once again expected to be the main force in fighting the Trump administration.
“I’ve seen this B-level movie before, and we’re ready to take it,” he said.
Becerra, the first secretary of health and public services to visit a family planning clinic, noted that the administration’s job is to withdraw Trump administration policies, such as those on reproductive care during his cabinet tenure. He pointed out that the Biden administration went to the Supreme Court Protect to obtain mifes certificateone of the drugs used to terminate pregnancy in medical treatment.
“We obviously played a strong defense,” he said in an interview in a formal conference room a few days before Trump’s opening earlier this year.
Becerra was sworn in in March 2021 Leading a vast bureaucracy of health and public services At a time when Covid was the most concerned, there were 95,000 people. He said the most important achievement of his agency was to shoot 700 million co-vaccine shots into the arms of Americans.
He also highlighted the launch of the 988 hotline, which provides 24/7 suicide and crisis counseling and provides health care services to more than 300 million people, with 46 million Americans receiving health insurance coverage due to the Fasorable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.
But Becerra also faces criticism in her secretary dealing with issues such as the Monkeypox outbreak, including members of the Biden administration, who argued that he lacked urgency and tried to unload his responsibilities to the United States. He defended his response, believing his department was leading the way in distributing Moncaipox vaccine nationwide, with the state and local jurisdictions finally making a decision on how to distribute it.
“We have no control over how states and local jurisdictions distribute vaccines, but we make sure they get it,” he said.
