University of Michigan closes Dei office as universities scramble to avoid Trump’s scrutiny
First on Fox: Florida lawyer General James Uthmeier will announce new policy changes on Tuesday prohibiting law firms with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative from working with the Attorney General’s Office as external lawyers.
“What I deeply troubled is that these discriminatory practices have been accepted and amplified by many law firms in our country,” Uthmeier wrote in a policy memorandum. “If we are truly committed to the rule of law, then we must truly commit to justice equally according to the law. dei and ESG practices these bedrock principles. ”
“From now on, the Florida Attorney General’s Office will no longer participate in or approve the participation of private law firms that own or continue to engage in illegal and improper discrimination and prejudice. Any form of racial discrimination is wrong and illegal. Florida taxpayer resources should not re-emphasize the proceeds of the law firms they pay, otherwise “otherwise pretend.”

Law firms with a history of so-called racial discrimination practices will be banned from working with the state unless they show significant changes, the memo said.
The ban targets law firms involving several types of dei Programs, including those with Mansfield certification, require diversity in leadership positions; minority diversity scorecards; and racial diversity goals for recruitment, promotion and contract goals.
“My office will immediately begin a review of existing external attorney participation to assess compliance with this policy,” Uthmeier said.
When reviewing its attorneys, AG’s office will also consider “excellent” individual attorneys who “personally reject DEI and ESG Rouses,” even if they are part of a law firm that owns the DEI program.

Other practices under review include diversity scholarships limited to specific racial or ethnic groups, diversity coaching programs, DEI-centered recruitment sites, and workplace DEI training, “so mean that it forms a reasonable basis for hostile work environments or allegations.” Companies participating in third-party diversity programs such as the Legal Diversity Committee may also be disqualified, as well as environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework.

Florida enacted the Stop Awakening Act in April 2022, which restricts employers from enforcing DEI training, which can be interpreted as promoting certain concepts such as inherent racism or gender discrimination. However, the federal district court permanently blocked the bill’s provisions last year, declaring an infringement of the right to freedom of speech under the First and Fourteenth Amendments. In 2023, Desantis signed legislation prohibiting public universities and universities from allocating state or federal funds to DEI programs.
