The Justice Department announced Tuesday that under “Don’t Forget Operation”, the FBI will send 60 personnel to various places in the “Indian State” within six months, and they will rotate in a 90-day temporary mission.
Additional staff will support the FBI Field Office in Albuquerque; Denver; Detroit; Miss Jackson; Minneapolis; Oklahoma City; Phoenix; Portland, Oregon; Seattle; and Salt Lake City.

The news comes after the Albuquerque FBI field office said a man admitted to killing an Indigenous artist after a November 2021 argument. The FBI said Deanna Autumn Leaf Suazo is a talented artist, the daughter of Navajo artist Geraldine Tso, who was killed by her boyfriend, Santiago Martinez.

“Crime rates among American Indians and Alaska Indigenous communities “By soaring FBI resources and working closely with U.S. lawyers and tribal law enforcement to prosecute cases, the Justice Department will help deliver the sense of responsibility these communities deserve,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said.

In 2019, Trump signed an executive order during his first term that established a task force for American Indians and Alaska Natives due to disappearance and murder. The order is designed to address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous peoples, especially women and girls.
Tuesday’s announcement will be the third iteration of Don’t Forget the Action, which has supported investigative support for more than 500 cases over the past two years. The operation resulted in the recovery of 10 child victims, 52 arrests and 25 indictments or judicial complaints.
