Ovechkin was a goal from Gretzky, which was his chance on Friday night but refused to catch it.

“He wanted to break the record with the goalkeeper in the crease, and I appreciate it,” head coach Spencer Carbery said. “He told me that on the bench, I just wanted to confirm that he didn’t want to go out. As a coach, it’s hard for us to make sure at that moment: a hat trick, at home.
He added: “We have six games left and he wants to break the record and at that moment he shoots the hockey puck at the goalkeeper.”
