St. Jude Children’s Hospital is expected to diagnose about about 400,000 children worldwide cancer This year. In the United States, research and treatment help improve survival. 80% of children live through treatment for five years or more, but are doing a lot of work to improve that statistics and find treatments for the more rare form of cancer.

Fernando’s son Frederico was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of nine. Medulloblastoma is the most common brain tumor in children, but it is still rare. Only one in five of only one-fifth of the million children are diagnosed with the disease each year, making funding for new research difficult.

The five-year survival rate of patients with medulloblastoma is more than 80%. But if the disease recovers, the five-year survival rate drops to less than 40%.

“He’s an outlier, but we know this type of tumor will be back, so it goes against time. That’s why we’re saving him quickly and saving thousands of other other kids from him.”
