Holland attributes the fact-checked attack to its effectiveness.

“For historical purposes, fact checking forms the boundaries of reality. It builds evidence-based records that can withstand political pressure,” she wrote. “Politicians who want to create their own reality are working to reconcile with fact checking, and they are helping them with powerful technology companies and social media platforms.”

Faced with these challenges, Horan called on fact inspectors to defend their “seeking truth.”

Holland concluded: “If we want a society that respects the truth, then now is the time for us to fight for it.”
