Ex-UFC star Cain Velasquez gets prison time for 2022 California shooting

Former UFC star Cain Velasquez He was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday without competing for his role in a 2022 shooting in California.

He regretted the shooting before the judge sentencing the verdict.

“I agree to accept any sentence,” he said. “Go forward and I will try to set a great example for everyone. In all of these aspects, I want to feel safe with my family and my community.”

District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in August that the former champion did not fight for felony assault and gun charges as part of a deal with the Santa Clara County Attorney’s Office. As part of the deal, premeditated murder against Velasquez was dropped.

Velasquez was arrested in February 2022 on attempted murder and multiple gun charges after police said he fired a shot at a pickup truck carrying a man he allegedly sexually assaulted his 4-year-old son. The man was later identified as Harry Goularte.

Prosecutors said Velasquez chased a pickup truck and took the man into busy streets in the San Jose area. Authorities said the chase spanned 11 miles.

Officials said the former mixed martial artist injured the man’s stepfather in the incident.

Velasquez wins his first UFC heavyweight champion In 2012, by defeating Junior Dos Santos. Velasquez successfully defended his championship twice.
