The former criminal accused of torture and killing an elderly couple in New York City was ordered to be locked on Ricks Island, less than a week after prosecutors said he randomly preyed on his husband and wife and then burned the house when he left the residence.
Court records show Jamel McGriff He pleaded not guilty to the killings of Maureen and Frank Olton (77 and 76) a few days later before appearing Tuesday night before a Queens County judge for an identity hearing.
McGriff42, faces several crimes of murder, kidnapping, arson, robbery and burglary, Queens Attorney Melinda Katz calls it “a terrible double murder that shocked our entire city.”
“As the alleged act of violence, the defendant forced himself into a Belleross residence, stabbed an elderly homeowner to die and then deliberately set the house on fire,” Ms. Katz said Friday. “Frank and Maureen Olton just spent a Monday morning at home, and their deaths broke the security in New York.”
McGriffHe had previously been convicted of sexual offences and was imprisoned for 17 years for the 2006 robbery, and if convicted, the rest of his life might be spent for the rest of his life.
Police say McGriff On September 8, about to go door to door on October 8, Bellerose residents were asked if they could go in and charge their phones when approaching the Oltons house.
McGriff Prosecutors said that despite Alton’s resistance, despite Mr. Alton’s resistance, he forced himself into the home, then tortured her husband, and attacked Mrs. Alton during a five-hour invasion. He caught fire when he kept a duffel bag full of items.
Officials said Mr. Alton was tied to a pole in the basement and died from several stab wounds in the chest and neck. Mrs. Alton’s throat and ash were broken in her trachea, causing severe burns, when the couple’s body was found in the burned home.
McGriff Police said a $500 shopping spree at Macy’s with Mr. Alton’s credit card was held, and then again used the murdered husband’s card to shoot a movie at a nearby theater. The next day, he was also trading cash on Oltons’ phone.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said McGriff Wednesday ended when officers found him in Times Square.
After being arrested, the prosecutor said McGriff Confessed to the police: “I will admit it. I killed them. I harassed them.”
Authorities say McGriff It has been linked to two recent robberies, including GameStop store in July and Verizon store in August.
Because of his identity as a sex offender, he was arrested for failing to register his address.
McGriff The New York Department of Corrections told the New York Times that the former official was cooperative and “had not violated his parole in important ways.”
