Thousands of California residents received an automatic reminder Tuesday that Election Day is next week – except for most voters, that’s not the case.
The error message emailed to voters in Los Angeles and Orange County comes with a subject line that says “The rest of the week to refund your vote” and tells voters, “is the last time you vote and mail and postmark One day” omits one day. Reminder sent via text message says: “Place your ballot before a nearby drop box or voting location at 8 p.m..”
Election officials said the incomplete message originated from Bartrottrax, which will automatically send messages to voters about the status of their mail ballots. The Denver-based company has been working with the California Secretary of State since 2020.
Ballottrax president Steve Olsen said automatic reminders should go out of about 100,000 voters in two legislative areas, including parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Kern and Tulley counties. Special primary elections will be held in these areas next week.
“As a result of the wrong target, many other voters are reminded,” Olson said in an email. He said the company is still investigating and withdrawing it immediately after determining which voters misunderstand.
The Los Angeles County Registration Official’s Office said “almost all” voters who subscribe to the Bardtrax update received the wrong message.
“We apologize for any confusion this has caused,” said a representative for California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.
