Some Ellicott residents in Maryland plan to appeal to Howard County officials’ request to cancel the peach and eggplant sculptures currently on display in town.
Both sculptures were produced by Bozman, Maryland, artist Jan Kirsh. The peach sculpture “Georgia Peach” is located outside the Grace Cafe in Georgia, while the eggplant (eggplant) is titled “Aubergine” outside the wine box in the wine shop.
The sculptures were borrowed by the City of Ellicott’s nonprofit Arts Foundation, according to the agenda of the Howard County Historical Preservation Commission’s September meeting.
The agenda states that applicants requested retrospectively that both sculptures were allowed to be installed, and officials previously commissioned “expressed their concerns about a work of art with historic buildings and said that any proposed sculpture should be enhanced or benefit from a historic area.”
Eggplant and peaches are often used to express allusions about certain body parts in the text.
Howard County officials told Baltimore’s WBAL-TV that the committee had previously “approved Aubergine’s artwork for 12 months, with the change made by the applicant. Peaches were rejected at the proposed location, but applicants could submit applications from other locations.”
Supporters of the sculpture told WBAL-TV that they plan to appeal the committee’s decision.
“I think they fit in small towns. I mean, everyone loves them. We are a community of business owners and people, and everyone seems to like it. So, I feel like we are small towns, not just history. We are history now.”
