“This critical project has been in trouble for two years due to the lack of prior focus from the previous administration. We no longer take action to complete the deal so that we can help protect our southern border and combat drug trafficking while preventing green new deal priorities where tax subsidies are meaningless,” Duffy said. “The department will continue to clear out the unprecedented backlog of grants from the previous administration and provide results.”
The $150 million investment will provide CBP with new latest inspection facilities, as well as Commercial Vehicle Law Enforcement facility.

It will also include the deployment of smart transportation technologies that help manage transportation needs through dynamic charges, which the point says will increase inspection efficiency and enhance cross-border trade.
DOT added that the project will reduce traffic congestion, bringing economic benefits and stimulating job creation in Southern California.
Once the project is completed, nearly 3,600 trucks currently operating across the border at Otay Mesa and Tecate ports of entry across the border will have alternative transit.

The project comes after the Trump administration inherited more than 3,200 grants promoted by the Biden administration but never followed.
“This unprecedented backlog of grants delays critical investments in communities across the country,” Dot said in a press release. “Under the leadership of Secretary Duffy, the department is working to accelerate the allocation of these long-term funds and address core infrastructure projects.”
