Democrats should shut down the government rather than fund Trump’s ‘Mafia’ takeover, NYT columnist argues

New York Times Columnist Ezra Klein said in a podcast on Sunday that Democrats should consider forcing the administration to shut down against President Donald Trump.

“If you force me to choose, I would say Schumer might be right. It’s not time to stop production – partly because Democrats aren’t ready to win,” Klein said. “But the bill that passed funds in March was exhausted at the end of this month. So, we face the question again: Should Senate Democrats work with Senate Republicans to fund the administration? I can’t see how they do it.”

Klein claims that in Trump, he will be accomplice in the “authoritarian merger phase” of his presidency, if government funds are allowed to continue.

“I want to be very clear about what I’m saying here. Donald Trump is corrupting the administration – he is using it to chase his enemies, line up in his pockets and cast his own strength. He is destroying it like the way the Mafia destroys the industry it controls,” Klein said.

He added: “This is what Trump did to the administration. It’s something that the Democrats can’t provide. That’s what they have to try to stop.”

Klein admits that he is not an “absolutely certain” closure is a good strategy, but concludes that this may still be better than the party’s current approach.

“I am quite certain that this moment deserves real opposition — that Democrats, morally speaking, should not fund a government that Trump is turning into a tool of personal enrichment and power. But I am not certain that Democrats can win a shutdown — I am not certain that they have the leaders that they need. It is absolutely the case that Democrats could lose a shutdown, but whatever they’re doing right now, it’s not called winning,” Klein said.

Fox News Digital contacted the Democratic National Committee but received no immediate response.
