A Democratic senator in Delaware blames the Internet for “driving extremism in our country” after being assassinated.
Senator Chris Coons, D-Delaware, Appeared on CBS’ “Facing the Country” on Sunday. He told host Major Garrett that Americans cannot allow political violence to drive the country further, calling Kirk’s assassination “cruel” while discussing “the importance of First Amendment freedom of speech.”
“No matter how different my political views about him are, the idea that he will be killed in this weird and open way must take us all to reflect on our efforts because the internet is an acceleration,” Coons said.
He continued: “It is driving extremism in our country. It is making us disassemble left and right.”

“The algorithms on social media are always pushing who is the angry person, who is the loudest person, and he says the craziest things,” he said. “So, as long as there is a conversation or a problem on things that people may disagree with, but they have a civil conversation about it, and that will be pushed toward an angry and focused person.”
