Hewitt began his career as an editorial assistant to Richard Nixon after his retirement in San Clemente, California and New York.

He received three Emmy Awards during his tenure as co-host of weekend television news and public affairs On PBS Los Angeles Member KCET-TV. Hewitt also wrote for several publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times.
