The Justice Department charged the suspect Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. in federal court. Brown arrested for more than a decade in advance and served the robbery. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Brown would be prosecuted for the murder and said “a policy of soft crime” led to Zarutska’s death.

“Iryna Zarutska is a young woman who realizes the American dream – her horror murder is a direct result of the failure of failed crime policies that put criminals before innocent people,” Bondy said. “I have directed the attorney to the federal prosecution of Decarlos Brown Jr., a violent criminal with a history of violent crime to murder.”

All members of the House Judiciary Committee are allowed to attend the hearing. The group’s oversight subcommittee will lead it.

The live hearing marks the latest example of the committee’s visit to the Democratic-led city to highlight crime rates and prosecutor failures. The committee visited Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had jurisdiction in April 2023, filed criminal charges against then-format President Donald Trump in Bragg. Later that year, the committee held a similar hearing in Chicago.

Members at the hearing reviewed prosecutor policies such as cashless bail and highlighted recidivism and stories of victims and their families.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, RN.J., confirmed the hearing in a statement to Fox News’s digits, saying Zarutska’s death was “the culmination of years of failed liberal policies that put criminals ahead of victims.”

“This is completely preventable and we should attribute it to people repairing another innocent life before losing it,” Van Drew said.
