Columbia University On Thursday, some students who occupied the campus building in anti-Israel protests last spring will face a series of punishments, including evictions and suspensions.
The news comes after the Ivy League agency found itself caught in controversy over the arrested students and revoked more than $400 million in federal grants Trump administration Because it “faces the ongoing harassment of Jewish students.”
The Columbia University Judicial Committee issued these penalties, including “year suspension of school, temporary revocation and evictions related to Hamilton Hall.”

“In terms of other events that occurred last spring, the UJB’s decision has confirmed the previous disciplinary action taken,” the school said in a statement. “The return of suspended students will be supervised by the Columbia University Office of Living.”
School Rules Administrators said Thursday that the penalty was effective at the end of the appeal period.
Colombia’s scrutiny of the rise comes under rigorous scrutiny Anti-Semitism on campus October 7, 2023, following Hamas’ attack on Israel.
In February, the House Education and Workforce Committee sent a letter to Colombia’s interim President Katrina Armstrong, whose board chair listed anti-Semitic events on campus since the fall semester of 2024.

The list includes taking over Hamilton Hall, harassment of Jewish students and interruptions to Israeli history lessons.
In August 2024, three Columbia University deans resigned for their writing exchanges, “disturbing the ancient anti-Semitism.”
Deputy Dean and Chief Executive Susan Chang-Kim; Matthew Patashnick, Vice Dean of Student and Family Support; and Cristen Kromm, Dean of Undergraduate Life, all resigned.

That same month, Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, after months of criticism, criticized the protests on campus, many of whom were trapped in conflict between anti-Israeli protesters and police, as well as anti-Semitism on campus.
Armstrong sent a letter Friday in response to the Trump administration’s cuts to federal grants.

“When I accepted the role of interim president in August 2024, I knew Colombia needed to reset the previous year’s reset, as well as the chaos of camps and protests on our campuses,” Armstrong wrote. “The university also needs to acknowledge and fix the damage to our Jewish students who were targeted, harassed and made it feel unsafe or unwelcome to our campuses last spring.”
