Columbia University students and graduates gathered over the weekend to protest the school’s recent acquiesce to the Trump administration’s demand to combat anti-Semitism in schools and campuses, and Arrest Mahmoud Khalila pro-Palestine leader on campus.
During the protests, several graduate students from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) chopped their diplomas.
“Sipa and Colombia are opposing the incredible efforts made by their students to envision a world where the world can enjoy its full human, civil and national rights,” said one of the protesters. “Sipa is not proud, we feel angry. We will continue to be angry at the institution until Mahmoud Khalil is free.”

Another protester announced that she was “give up” her degree and then destroyed the diploma.

The rally took place during a celebration of the Columbia Alumni Association on Saturday.

According to his LinkedIn, Khalil studied at the American University of Lebanon in Beirut and then went on to study for a master’s degree in public administration in Colombia in January 2023.

Trump administration recently Raised $400 millionciting the school’s failure to control pro-Palestinian violence on campus. The school also agreed with the Trump administration’s request to ban student protesters from masking their faces with masks and other silences.

“Dr. Armstrong accepted the role of interim president during college and worked tirelessly to promote the interests of our community,” Board Chairman David J. Greenwald said in a press release late Friday. “Hurricane Katrina has always dedicated her heart to Columbia. We appreciate her service and look forward to her continued contribution to the university.”
