The resolution comes as the Trump administration conducts critical research on universities that receive federal funding. In March, the government revoked $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University, citing concerns about anti-Semitism on campus following the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel. The action is part of a broader initiative that examines elite universities suspected of violating civil rights, especially for Jewish students.
The administration has also shifted its focus to eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in universities to align with Trump’s executive order, while also banning biological men from participating in women’s sports. The Ministry of Education announced an investigation into alleged racial discrimination, race-challenging admissions and scholarships at more than 50 universities.
Trump also signed an executive order that significantly reduced the size of the Education Department in March. Despite the reduction in operations in the department, it retains control over key functions such as Title I funding, Pell Grants, student loans and special education funding.
