Sacramento – Popular benefits for electric and low-emission vehicle drivers in California are coming to an end.
Starting October 1, motorists with clean air vehicle decals will no longer be able to solo in the carpool lane, as the program is not expanded by the federal government, according to the California Department of Automobile.
Carpooling benefits are elevated to a cost-effective incentive to encourage Californians to buy clean and zero-emission vehicles. More than one million motorists have applied for decals since they were obtained more than 20 years ago. There are about 500,000 vehicles with active decals in California, making them use only carpool lanes. last month, DMV stops releasing new decals And warn that the plan may end.
Expanding the plan will require approval from Congress and President Trump.

California is one of the 13 states that provide benefits. Qualified vehicles include fuel cell motors, natural gas or plug-in electric vehicles.
Last year, Newsom signed a bill that extended California’s decal program to 2027, but the state will no longer be able to continue without federal authorities, the governor’s office said. According to the California Energy Commission, 25% of new cars sold in the state are zero-emission vehicles.
Drivers of electric motors and low-emission vehicles can only use lanes after they expire if they meet multiple occupants requirements. In some areas, tolls for drivers with decals will also end on October 1.

“Californians are committed to lowering their carbon footprint, and these decals help drivers become good stewards on our highways and environment,” said Steve Gordon, director of California DMV, in a statement. “By cancelling the program, thousands of drivers in California will pay.
