“Real-time” host Bill Maher Donald Trump’s National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
“If you come down from the news in the summer, then who can blame you if you do it – now is a country, first in Los Angeles, then in Washington, D.C., and soon to a city near you, the new normal is the troops on the streets.”
Last month, Trump Activated about 800 members Washington, DC National Guard (DC National Guard) to help restore order in the U.S. capital, including combating crime.
“They embarrass us”: National Guard’s presence in DC Sparks Fiery Capitol Clash

Maher argues that Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in cities such as Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles sets a dangerous precedent. (Screen shot, “Real-time”/HBO)
Late night host questioned why law enforcement officers did not insult Trump “so few” that he sent “militaries” to work in DC and DC, among others Los Angeles. “Why not get angry with you?” he asked.
Mach believes that deploying troops to U.S. cities is unprecedented outside of a “real emergency,” adding that crime in Washington has not been raised to this level.
“Trump said, ‘I’m not a dictator. I just know how to stop crime.’ I promote him in his words because when did he tell the lie?” He joked that suggesting “the first page in the dictator’s manual” is an excuse that the dictator will “find an excuse to do what you want to do.”
Maher suggested that Trump’s decision was a hijacking and attack by Edward Coristine, a member of the government efficiency department in Washington last month.
Although acknowledging capital crime is a problem, Mach noted that cities with higher crime rates led by Republicans have not yet accepted the National Guard deployment.

Late night host noted that while Trump touted a 87% decrease in violent crime in DC, touted by Metropolitan Police data, there is a dark side to deploy troops to combat crime. He believes that although “military states can reduce crime”, the establishment of military states is not “safer to democracy.”
Maher warned: “Once there is an army loyal to you that is already in the game on the street, this is the normal game.
