Ben Shapiro and Bill Maher The Bible and Bible tangled on Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher: Overtime”, and the conservative Orthodox Jewish commentators received unexpected reactions from freelance comedians Los Angeles audiences.
Maher, a star in the anti-religious documentary “Religion” and a famous atheist, said the Bible contains “nonsense” and “evil.”
“If God wrote this book, how could there be ‘thing we disagree with?’ It has to be perfect because it was written by people you know, or it is not perfect because it is obviously written by people and is full of nonsense and evil.”

Shapiro discusses the Bible with the “Real Time” host, part of a broader dialogue about Shapiro’s new book The Lion and the Scavenger. The book argues that society is composed of two contrasting personality types: the lions trying to build and the people trying to destroy. Mach then asked Shapiro if he would feel comfortable compared to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, whose work was highly critical of Christianity.
Co-founder of Daily Wire It argues that Nietzsche’s criticism of the Jewish Christian religion (which shows that it encourages weakness to power) is unfair. Shapiro added that those who believe in the Bible should also believe that virtues produce better results in life, rather than not taking good behavior.

He quoted Deuteronomy 30:19: “Choose life so that you and your children can live” and said that this is the basic belief in Judaism.
When Shapiro told Maher, he would not try to force him to believe in the law, and Maher initiated anti-religious criticism. Shapiro countered that the Bible provided a moral foundation for him not only as a religious Jew, but also for the atheist Maher.
Shapiro said: “Bill, you and I agree with morality, I will say at least 87%.
“Moral…but not from the Bible,” Mah interrupted.
“Why do you and I agree like 87.5% moral consent? I’m a religious Jew, you’re an atheist – why do we agree with these things?” Shapiro asked. “In Western societies, we may have grown up for miles each other, with thousands of years of biblical history behind Western societies. So you can think you beat three times and form your own morality, but the reality is that you were morally born, and that’s at the third base.”
When Shapiro concluded, the audience burst into laughter and applause. Mach replied that Western society derives morality from the Enlightenment, which he said was anti-religious. He argued that the founding fathers of America were not “special Christie”, while Shapiro pointed out that Thomas Jefferson wrote a version of the morally targeted Bible, and that miracles were eliminated.

When Maher asked why people should continue to believe in the modern Bible, Shapiro replied that “cut flowers are dead”, believing that a society that frees itself from its moral roots cannot maintain its values indefinitely.
