BBC seeks more prominent credit in Apple and Google News | TechCrunch

The BBC has filed a complaint with the UK antitrust regulator, complaining that aggregators like Apple News and Google News minimize the credibility of the stories they show.

Apple Insider reports BBC is asking about the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority Ask Apple and Google to highlight credit news more. Although, in theory, the CMA decision only applies to UK publications, any changes to the aggregator may also affect other publishers.

“If the audience derives value from our content and services but attributes that value to the gatekeeper, not the BBC, then this will undermine the BBC’s perceived value,” the broadcaster wrote in the complaint.

This perceived value may be especially important to the BBC as it receives most of the funds from the licensing fees paid by UK families – so it is important to see the broadcaster’s work and be valuable to maintain support for the expenses.
