Anthropomorphization will pay a record $1.5 billion to resolve class-action piracy lawsuits filed by authors and publishers. The settlement is the largest payment ever made in the United States.

“In June, the District Court issued a landmark ruling on AI development and copyright law, finding that humans train AI models constitute fair use,” said Aparna Sridhar, deputy general counsel at Anthropic, in a statement. “If approved, today’s settlement will address the plaintiff’s remaining legacy claims. We remain committed to developing secure AI systems to help people and organizations expand their capabilities, enhance scientific discoveries and solve complex problems.”
