According to a court challenge, Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian-born green card holder who lives in Vermont, was detained while attending immigration interviews at the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services Site Office in Colchester, Vermont.

A video posted on social media on Monday appeared to show Mahdawi was escorted by law enforcement officers, including a man in a jacket, identified him as a Homeland Security Investigation Agent.

Mahdawi co-founded the Palestinian Student Union in Colombia in the fall of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, according to a court filing. He and Mahmoud Khalilanother pro-Palestinian activist was detained by federal immigration officials led by the Trump administration earlier this year.
Mahdawi is studying philosophy in Colombia and is expected to graduate from university in May, the document said. It also said Mahadawi was the organizer of the Colombian protests until he quit leadership in March this year. The document claims that he is a “legitimate permanent resident” of the United States.

U.S. District Court Judge William Sessions ruled Monday that Mahadawi cannot be removed from the U.S. or Vermont until further court reviews.
Two Vermont Senators Bernie Sanders publicly condemned Mahdawi’s arrest, who he believed was independent, Democrat Peter Welch and the state’s Congress representative Rep. Becca Balint, Democrat.

The trio issued a joint statement on Monday identifying Mahdawi as a resident at the Vermont White River junction.
Mahdawi walked into an immigration office because it should be the last step in his citizenship process” but rather “arresisted and removed by plainclothes, armed, armed people, face-faced people,” the statement said.

“These individuals refused to provide any information about where he was taken or what would happen,” the statement stated.

“This is immoral, inhuman and illegal,” the three said. “Mr. Mahadawi, a legal resident of the United States, must conduct due process under the law and be detained immediately.”
