Authorities in South Africa’s Eastern Cape rescued a kidnapped American pastor in a deadly gunfight on Tuesday.
The Bureau of First Crime Investigation (HAWKS) issued a statement announcing that an action led by the agency “caught a successful rescue of an American pastor.”
Josh Sullivan, 34, of Tennessee, was kidnapped by several armed, masked men in his church in the Eastern Cape, despite the press release not naming the pastor.

Police said they received a prompt from Sullivan inside a secure home in Gqeberha Kwamagxaki. When they arrived at home, the suspect began firing at law enforcement in the car inside the premises and tried to escape.

A “high-intensity gun battle” occurred and three unknown suspects were killed.
Police said Sullivan was found in the same vehicle where the suspect was located, but he was “miraculously unharmed”, adding that he was “in good condition at the moment.”
