‘AmerExit’? Republicans push for US to leave NATO amid stalled Ukraine peace negotiations

The momentum is building some Republicans, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk to pull out of NATO amid stagnant negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump Private Floating reportedly pulled the United States out of the league during his first term, with Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) publicly supporting such efforts in recent weeks and said it was a NATO nation’s “leave” alliance after an emergency with Ukraine in London in which there was no U.S. in Ukraine in London

Lee said in Sunday’s X post that if “NATO continues to move forward without the United States”, the United States should “continue from NATO.” Lee also proposed various names for the movement on Monday.

“What should we call the United States leaving NATO? amereexit?natexit?” Lee said in his X post on Monday, the term used to describe the term for Britain’s exit from the EU.

“Based on the fact that we provide a disproportionate share of security demand demand, it’s a good thing that our NATO allies give us such favorable trade terms.”

Lee is not the only MP to express this emotion. Rep. Thomas Massie, r-ky. “NATO is a Cold War relic that needs to be downgraded to a pavilion where the Smithsonians speak,” said in an article on X on Sunday.

The comments from lawmakers were also at Musk who led the Trump administration’s newly formed Department of Administration Efficiency (DOGE), who also jointly supported the evacuation from NATO on Saturday. Musk said in an article on X, “I agree” in response to another article, claiming it was time for the United States to detach itself from NATO and the United Nations.

The push to pull out of NATO coincides with stalled negotiations to end the war in Ukraine as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sought for Ukraine to become a NATO member after Russia invaded his country in 2022. But Trump kicked Zelenskyy out of the White House on Friday after meeting to secure a deal, saying Zelenskyy was welcome back when he was ready for peace.

The withdrawal of the United States from NATO will require Congressional approval. The bipartisan rule included in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act requires the executive branch to need the support of 60 senators or legislative approval of Congress to withdraw from the coalition. Senator Tim Kaine, D-VA. R-Fla, who is currently Secretary of State for Trump. Marco Rubio led the provision.

Scott Anderson, a research fellow at the Brookings Institutional Think Tank Governance Research Fellow, said the provision paves the way for a legal battle if the administration tries to unilaterally withdraw from the U.S. coalition.

Anderson Fox Fox Fox News News (Anderson News Digital) told Fox News News Digital, Anderson News News told News Digital that the logic is that if the president tries to do this without Congress, then you will fight…it does indeed enact this injunction and says that, essentially, we will litigate lawsuits, and if you try to do that, it is the Supreme Court, it is the largest Congress, it is the highest. ”

Even so, Anderson pointed out that although Anderson said that people who own property in NATO countries or those who own property are some people who can be said to be standing up and challenging the move.

Despite a slight decline in support in recent years, most Americans have maintained a good view of NATO. According to a Pew Research Center survey in May 2024, Americans’ views on the military alliance are favorable. But that was four percentage points from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged NATO allies to make defense contributions to the alliance in February.

“NATO should pursue these goals, too,” Hegseth told NATO members in Brussels in February. “NATO is a great alliance, the most successful defense alliance in history, but to endure the future, our partners must do more for European defense.”

“We have to make NATO great again,” he said.
