The capital of Washington Star Alex Ovechkin is keen on pursuing hockey history, and the veteran NHL star made a promise Wednesday that would make an impact outside the sport.
The Capital announced on Wednesday a partnership with Ovechkin, Hockey Fighting Cancer and V Foundation to raise funds for pediatric cancer research, the same pursuit he pursues NHL career scoring record.

“I have met many brave kids throughout my NHL career fighting cancer and I think it’s important to do everything I can to help save the life of this terrible disease,” Ovechkin said. “I want to thank the V Foundation for all the hard work, and I look forward to using my platform and doing everything to help further the V Foundation and hockey fight cancer mission.”
Ovechkin has 11 goals from Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals. Starting from Wednesday’s match New York Rangers, Ovechkin makes a total of the same donations as his career goals for the rest of his career.
His donations will match the commemorative sports and entertainment company that owns the hat.
