How does it work? Training robot feeling
The secret seasoning behind this emotional robot is in its training process. Initially, human operators used instinct and social intuition to remotely control robots to guide their behavior. For example, if someone is shy about approaching a robot, the operator responds in a cordial way, teaching the robot how to reflect this emotion. These interactions are recorded and fed into an AI system that analyzes each motion and response.
What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Disney research best explains this: “Our model learns to predict continuous operator commands through diffusion processes and through discrete commands of classifiers.”
In simpler terms, AI learns two things: smooth movements (such as waving) and specific movements (such as saying hello). After extensive training on the simulation, the robot tested it with real people and nailed it. Users can even identify different “emotions” generated by robot AI.

Behind this innovation is Newton. Open source physics engine Developed by Disney Research in collaboration with Nvidia and Google DeepMind. This means that before entering the real world, robots can practice complex tasks such as interacting with soft objects or navigating tricky terrain.
Newton’s abilities are impressive:
- Differentiable physics: It allows a robot to optimize its movement by simulating how the movement in the real world works.
- Scalability: Robots can interact with different objects such as food or fabric, making them perfect for entertainment purposes.
- GPU acceleration: With NVIDIA’s warping technology, the simulation is 100 times faster than traditional methods.
Disney plans to use Newton to enhance its robotic character platform, including expressive robots like the Star Wars-inspired BDX model, which was exhibited this year at NVIDIA’s GTC Keynote.
