There is a new Apple flagship phone in town: the long-awaited iPhone 17. While the iPhone 17 is the most affordable option for new phones, there are no basic options. It has many updates such as a 120Hz display, an upgraded camera and a faster A19 chip.

With the new base iPhone, we think it’s appropriate to compare it to one of the toughest competitors: Samsung’s base Galaxy S25. Both have very similar characteristics and will make a great smartphone depending on whether you are on the Apple or Android side of the gap.

One of the biggest updates to the iPhone 17 is that it ends up with a promotional display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, which is only in the iPhone’s Pro model. Samsung’s Galaxy Line has a refresh rate of 120Hz for some time (since the S20), which is no different from the Galaxy S25. The S25 also has a always display option that can be configured to always display or by tapping the screen. Its 6.2-inch AMOLED display isn’t that sharp, has a resolution of 2,340×1,080 pixels, and isn’t as bright as bright at brightness, and not as bright in 2,600 columns.

It doesn’t have one, not two, but three cameras: a 50-megapixel wide, a 12-megapixel overspeed type and a 10-megapixel telephoto. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 has only two: a 48-megapixel width and an impressive 48-megapixel speeding. The Galaxy S25’s telephoto camera supports 3x optical zoom, while the iPhone 17 supports 2x optical zoom.

The S25’s front camera has a 12-megapixel lens, while the iPhone 17’s lens has 18-megapixel. The iPhone 17 also has a new center stage feature that allows you to take selfies of landscapes without rotating your phone.

In terms of video, the S25 can shoot at 8K video at 30 frames per second, while the iPhone 17 can shoot at 4K at 30 and 60 frames per second.

Battery life

Apple hasn’t shared the exact battery specifications of the iPhone 17 yet, but we do know it has up to 30 hours of video playback. According to the company, it also uses new AI-driven adaptive power on it iOS 26 With performance tuning, this can help protect battery life.

The Galaxy S25 comes with a 4,000-MAH battery, which Samsung says can provide up to 29 hours of video playback. In our tests, we said the Galaxy S25 can be used regularly for about a day and a half, while the iPhone 17 lasts for more than a day. At the time of writing, we’re still busy testing the iPhone 17, but the two phones seem fairly comparable when it comes to battery life.

Both the iPhone 17 and Samsung Galaxy S25 cost about $800, but the storage sizes are very different. The 256GB version of the iPhone 17 starts at $799 ($829 if there is no carrier), while the Samsung Galaxy S25 costs $800 for the 128GB model. The Galaxy S25, which hits the 256GB version, adds $60 to $60.
