Reporter’s Notebook: Israeli hostage families plead, peace falters, and war grinds on in Gaza

I’ve reported from the Middle East for about 25 years. Those clumsy cliches still work… “The more changes… they stay the same”.

This is not to say that the three weeks we stayed here this time was boring. On Old Luna Park, the fall coaster has more ups and downs.

Our first outdoor shooting is appropriate enough to access the freed hostages and captive families Hamas. Because, for most Israelis, this is one of the most important themes. There are 48 people held by terrorists and 20 are still alive. Their imprisonment time was nearly 2 years after the Gaza war.

We met our family on the 700th day of the hostage being imprisoned. Lishay Lava-Mira begs her husband Omri to go home. Liron Berman is sure his twin fraternity will do this (“they are strong”). Keith Siegel, a hostage, himself lasted for nearly 500 days, expressed and healthy, seeking help outside the Israeli government. “I call on Trump to continue his efforts.”

Early in our stay, hope for a new peace plan us Traction may be gained. All 48 hostages will be released in exchange for 3,000 Palestinian prisoners and a ceasefire to assess the next step.

This seemingly reasonable plan makes left, right and center strikes.

First, we learned horror when we had a quick breakfast in the hotel. Two gunmen shot in Jerusalem on a bus and bus stop, killing six people and injuring them. The scene is shocking, eliminated terrorist Brave.

Then the next morning, when Cameraman Ben and I were doing a routine roundup of news on the balcony of the hotel we called home, I long noticed the corners of my eyes and the dedicated producer Yael in the studio jumped around in our studio room.

Israel has made incredible goals in the neutral region of Doha, Qatar. The activists claimed they were discussing a peace plan at the time. The U.S. proposal is as dead as any victims that Israelis managed to suffer (apparently without leadership).

Then put the final “payment” into peace negotiations. Israel launched an Israeli full-scale ground invasion of Gaza City. To end the remaining 3,000 Hamas fighters and their infrastructure. As Netanyahu said, “starts with Gaza (the ugly Hamas massacre and hostage hijacking on October 7).

It was frustration when I was a grizzly fight journalist like me and our top-notch Camera Ben, producers Yael and Security Rob. As they have throughout the war, Israel limits opportunities for action against Gaza.

So we rely on local journalists to show us horror. Destroyed city scene. Most importantly, the huge and ugly image of human suffering. Thousands of civilians, many not Hamas supporters, have to deal with the lively hell of terrorists and battles against them.

Remember that line: “I don’t want this to be on my biggest enemy”? Well, maybe I would choose Hamas, but without these poor Palestinian children, I don’t know anything about the geopolitics of this situation.

To our credit, IDF officials told us that they are slowly traveling through what is now Gaza’s lunar landscape. Be careful not to endanger civilians and/or hostages. Somehow, local health officials supported by Hamas said it seems to be a fact that 65,000 people have been killed two years after the war.

But again, this means that the entire process in Gaza City can take up to four months to complete, according to the officials we spoke with. For reserves of morale scale, fighting war has been too long. For residents, it’s too long. The desperate hostage has been too long.

Unless there is a breakthrough.

No wonder the locals are looking for it President Donald Trump and/or a range of countries, bodies, characters (yes, Pope Leo) attempting to surpass local leaders, Israel’s past against enemies such as Hezbollah and Iran seems to be a good war in the 21st century. The battle in Gaza is more like the ugly World War I war of the early 20th century.

Between our live shooting and the report held in Tel Aviv, we occasionally bite into some bars and restaurants in this seaside metropolis, although everything is completely tilted. Of course, what would this country be like for a diverse Palestinian population without the war around the shoulders.

There is no answer to this trip.
