Once upon a time, noise-cancelling headphones were primarily for one purpose: air travel. Bose and Sennheiser were one of the earliest commercial scenes, stopping pilots from unnecessary sounds before wireless headphones even were even one thing. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is not only commonplace these days, but is actually expected for any consumer headset.
In developing four sets of AirPods with ANC, Apple leveraged the power of its noise blocking system to create transparency modes for natural pronunciation, develop automatic adaptive audio capabilities, and create accessibility tools such as dialogue awareness. More accurate ANC system
To improve ANC technology, engineers adopted something called “headroom control” so that Apple could get more feedback from the microphone in the noise-reduction system. Those internal microphones monitor any unwanted noise that penetrates the ear canal and prompt the ANC settings to make necessary changes. The team was then able to optimize performance using a combination of software, geometry and acoustics.

The acoustic engineers include a dedicated ANC team and have also redesigned and repositioned the noise microphone. These are components that detect any unnecessary sound from the earbuds themselves or from your environment. Since there is now a more direct path to the ear canal, there is less room for interference or distortion. A new self-adjusting algorithm then takes data from these microphones and determines exactly what is happening inside the ear. Again, these are all names for precision.
“It’s essentially a cleaner signal, more predictable,” Tresky explained.
The role of ANC in other audio functions
The evolving ANC setup has become the basis for many features on AirPods and Airpods Pro. As the noise cancellation system improves, the transparency mode is also possible. Now the system can take into account more frequencies, Costello says, this ambient sound tool is more customizable.
