When I first used the app, I sat on the balcony, clicked the green “sound” button, and watched the app recognize the birds chi and sang in all directions. You can see different sound frequencies appear on the real-time spectrum, which is a visual representation of the audio world. The next time I checked the clock, I was shocked to see an hour passed. I haven’t found that red-winged blackbird, no matter where I am in the city, I always seem out of reach, but I’ll have more ordinary crows on my street (also unreasonably called “unfriendly”) and the surprisingly unmanned number of people they can produce to comfort themselves.

I also often listen to the comforting hoo-hoos that a giant horned owl sings at 9:30 pm before spring begins. I love the time travel of these moments, and despite some retrospective and interesting conversations I have accidentally recorded between bird songs.
