Walz, a former high school teacher and football coach, is often referred to as the 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, but told Axios this summer that he would not seek the White House if he ran for governor in 2026.
His three months as Harris’s campaign partner put Walz under the glare of national political focus and a new review of his record as governor, ahead of his role as a member of Congress and his handling of violent protests following the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
He is still in the process of Minnesota National Guardand was dissatisfied with leaving the army to run for Congress before deploying to the Iraq War.

Walz was first elected governor in 2018, winning 11 percentage points. He won re-election by 8 points in 2022.

“Governor Tim Walz has been a bold leader for Minnesota, and we’re thrilled that he is running again to continue delivering for families across his state. Laura Kelly of Kansas, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, said in a statement.
But Republican Governors Association Communications Director Courtney Alexander argued in a statement: “While Tim Walz spends time raising funds with the nation’s most liberal donors and pushes out disastrous policies for the Democrats, Minnesota suffers. Minnesota should do its job for a governor, they will work hard for them and take them seriously.
Former business director and Army veteran Kendall Qualls and physicians, as well as former state Senator Scott Jensen, 2022 Republican governor nominee, are Republican nominees.
