Blantire, Malawi – Malawi The election was held on Tuesday to choose the president, lawmakers and local government lawmakers, the first national vote since the 2019 presidential election, and was voided a year later due to widespread violations.
As residents of southern African countries, votes are voted on by residents who deal with fuel shortages and cost of living crises.
The election featured two main candidates faced in the fraudulent voting in 2019. Peter Mutharika, the then-serving officer, won the election against Lazarus Chakwera, the recent challenger, just to invalidate Mutharika’s victory and order a run again after protests on the streets. A year later, after 2020, Chakwera won a new election.
This is the second time the court has ordered a re-appointment of the presidential election in Africa, and it is the first time that the incumbents have dismissed.
Chakwera is now president and Mutharika is his most powerful challenger.
The Malawi Election Commission has been under rigorous scrutiny to ensure this free election. Mutharika has sparked controversy by choosing a former head of the Election Commission (that was severely criticized for the failed 2019 vote), his running companion this year.
Chakwera is a 70-year-old former theology lecturer and missionary who is seeking a second five-year term as an economic crisis Malawione of the poor and least developed countries in Africa.
Mutharika, 85, has a long history in Malawi politics, serving in the cabinet during his elder brother Binga Wa Mutharika, where he served as president from 2004 to 2012. Peter Mutharika then served as president from 2014-2020. Although the court found evidence of fraud in its 2019 victory, he is still shooting another shot at the leadership, including correctional fluid used to change the voting face.
The president has 17 candidates, including Joyce Banda Malawi 2012-2014 leader among the Mutharika brothers. She is the vice president of Binga Wa Mutharika and completed her term after his death.
Malawi The agriculture-based economy is in trouble, partly due to climate shocks such as cyclones and droughts. During Chakwera’s tenure, inflation rose from about 8% to 27%. For Tanzania, a landlocked country of about 21 million people between Zambia and Mozambique, everyday foods such as staple corn cannot afford it.
The severe fuel shortage also means that, now part of life, the queues at gas stations may be longer than the line of ballots on Election Day.
The election will be held in one day and the results must be announced within a week of the polls’ ending. Malawians will vote for the president, the president, the composition of the 229-seat parliament, known as the National Assembly, and more than 500 local government members.
Malawi The election law has been changed after the 2020 election, and this vote will be determined by the 50%+1 format – meaning the winner will need to receive more than 50% of the votes.
Analysts believe there is a high probability that no one will get a majority in the first round of votes, forcing possible runoff and another vote to put Chakwera and Mutharika against each other.
