More than 200 Contractors engaged in evaluation and improvement Google‘ AI The product has been fired in the event of at least two rounds of layoffs last month, with no warning. Workers who spoke with Wired said the move was in an ongoing struggle for ongoing salary and working conditions.
Over the past few years, Google has outsourced its AI rating efforts, which include evaluating, editing or rewriting Gemini Chatbot’s response to make it sound more human and “smart”), hired by Hitachi-atachi-Inaled Glopallogic and other outsourcing companies. Most evaluators working at Globallogic are based in the United States and process content in English. Just as content hosts help clear and categorize content on social media, these workers use their expertise, tips and judgments to teach chatbots and other AI products, including Google’s search summary feature, called AI Overview– Correct answers to a wide range of topics. Workers claim the latest cuts are the reason for trying to cancel protests on issues that include compensation and job insecurity.
These workers are often hired for their expertise and must have a master’s or doctorate degree to join the Super Evaluator program, which usually includes writers, teachers, and people in the creative field.
“I was just cut off,” said Andrew Lauzon, who received an email on August 15 with his termination message. “I’m for reasons, they say there’s a gradual decrease in the project, what does that mean.” He joined Globallogic in March 2024, and his work ranges from rating AI output to making various tips to feed the model.
Lauzon said the company’s move demonstrates the durability of such content review efforts. He claimed Globallogic began laying off employees regularly this year. “How should we feel safe in this job when we know we can go anywhere, anytime?” he added.
Workers who are still in the company claim they are increasingly worried that they are building to replace themselves. According to internal files viewed by Wired, Globallogic appears to be using these human evaluators to train Google AI systems, which can automatically rate responses with the goal of replacing them with AI.
Meanwhile, the company is also looking for ways to eliminate existing employees as it continues to hire new workers. In July, Globallogic made its workers in Austin, Texas, have to return to office, according to Wired’s notice. This directly affected several workers who were either unable to travel to the office due to financial restrictions or unable to go to work due to disability or nursing responsibilities.
Despite handling the job, they described as skilled and high-risk, eight workers who spoke with Wired said they were underpaid, lacking job safety and unfavorable working conditions. Sources say these so-called conditions have affected workers’ morale and challenged people’s ability to perform their jobs well. Some contractors tried to run the alliance earlier this year but said the efforts were cancelled. Now, they claim the company has retaliated against it. Two workers have filed a complaint with the National Labor and Industrial Relations Commission alleging that they were unfairly fired, one because of raised questions about wage transparency and the other to advocate for themselves and his colleagues.
