California State Assemblyman A measure passed that would ban most law enforcement officers from covering their faces at work in response to recent immigrant attacks in the Los Angeles area, with some federal agents covering their faces and hiding their identities.
The bill was approved Thursday and now heads to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s table. Although if he signs it into law, it is unclear whether the state can enforce a ban on federal agents who are conducting raids and arresting in local businesses President Donald Trump Large-scale eviction program.

“Someone should reasonably believe that they are law enforcement officers and not the one trying to kidnap you?” he said before the vote. “Imagine the absolute fear being dragged to the gun by a bunch of masked people.”
Supporters of the bill also quoted Erwin Chemerinsky, a constitutional expert at UC Berkeley. He wrote in an article published by Sacramento Bee that states cannot directly regulate the federal government, but that does not mean that federal employees can ignore state rules “unless doing so will greatly interfere with the performance of their duties.”
“It never wore a mask when arresting people on ice, and that never raised a question. Other officials in other places, state and federal law enforcement are not in public danger because they don’t wear masks on the streets,” he wrote.
