President Trump said on Thursday Russia violates Polish The airspace in the drone attack on Ukraine earlier this week could be a mistake.
“It may be a mistake, but whatever I have to do with this situation,” Trump told reporters.
In an attack on Ukraine earlier Wednesday, many Russian drones entered Polish airspace and were shot down with the help of NATO allies, the first since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
European leaders denounced the incident as a major escalation for the Kremlin, which abandoned Mr. Trump’s call for peace talks from his agents. Moscow has marked the charges as “founded” and insisted it does not intend to attack any targets Poland.
The Russian Defense Ministry said it attacked the “Ukrainian military industrial complex” in a “mass strike” but “no targets envisioned for destruction on Polish territory”, pointing to the range of flights of the drone, which it said it used aircraft against western Ukraine.
It said, “It is ready to consult with the Polish Ministry of Defense on this issue.”
However, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that the invasion was undoubtedly intentional. He called the incident an unprecedented attack on NATO and the EU.
“In this case, there are 19 violations, which is simply unintelligible,” he told reporters.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he activated NATO Article 4, which allows members to consult with allies and speak with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Mr. Rut called this situation a “reckless behavior” whether it was intentional or not.
