“I think it would be so powerful for the whole of America, because there shouldn’t be a preventable disaster,” Pratt, Who lost his home in the firetell reporters.
Florida Senator Rick Scott said the main goal of the investigation was to figure out why the fire broke out, why state and local governments couldn’t stop it and how officials could help victims recover.
“We will get the answer,” Scott said. “We will do everything we can to help the victims, and we will do everything we can to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.”
The congressional investigation launched Monday focused only on the Palisade fire, but Scott said the investigation could extend to other destructive fires in Los Angeles County.
“We’re going to start with that,” Scott said. “We’re just letting the facts take us where.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom welcomes the Congressional investigation. In a press conference, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson warned that the team was ready to issue subpoenas to force them to do so if officials did not cooperate.
“We don’t want to use it, and hopefully we don’t have to,” Johnson said. “It bodes well, Gov. New York is willing to do it, and that’s the best way to do it. But if they don’t, you’ll always get compelling testimony, compelling documents backed up, and that’s what we have to do.”
He added: “But, honestly, I don’t think we have to do that.”
