Nikon has partnered with the company to develop its first movie camera Obtained last yearred. this Nikon ZR (I think “R” is “red”) is a camera that companies can’t make on their own, combining Red’s Color Science and Video codec with Nikon’s AdvancedSuppp, married AF and in vivo stability. It will be in contrast to other creator-oriented models Canon’s new C50 and Sony FX3 But the price is much lower.
Nikon’s mirrorless camera is known for its high dynamic range, and the company leans towards the ZR. It has a partially stacked 24MP sensor with a 800/6400 bibase ISO, which promises over 15 dynamic range stops in high light sensitivity and greater shadows and highlights. While it doesn’t exactly match the C50’s 7K resolution, it will output 12K RAW 6K video at 60 fps, or 4K at 120 fps.
The internal original format used will be RED’s new R3D NE and a log format called Log3G10, with the same color science as Red’s high-end movie camera (so it can match the cameras in the post). This is a lighter codec designed specifically for Nikon, but the ZR also supports Nikon’s N-RAW format, as well as Prores/Prores Raw and H.265. If you want to apply the LUTS of Red, you can load and monitor 10 at once.
Nikon also focuses on audio, offering 32-bit buoy internal audio recording and Nokia’s Ozo surround sound technology through three built-in high-performance microphones. You can choose from five pickup patterns, including front (super direction), front, all directions, rear and stereo (binary ears), from interviews to video museums to ASMR.
The ZR comes with theme tracking hybrid phase detection autofocus, making it more palatable to content creators than any red camera that ever existed. These include AI tracking of people (eyes, heads and bodies) as well as animals and vehicles, and there are 9 types. It also has five-axis endobody stability with a smoothing amount of 7.5, which is obviously lacking in Canon’s new C50. Another key feature is digital focus breath compensation.
Since the ZR doesn’t have a viewfinder, Nikon makes the screen as big, bright and sharp as possible. This is a 4-inch 16:10 display with 1,000 columns of brightness and full DCI-P3 HDR color coverage with a resolution of 3070k, the highest of any camera display. Meanwhile, the tiny 540g (1.2 lb) body is enough to fully dissipate heat to allow the original record of 6k 60 fps at 25c (77f) temperatures up to 125 minutes. It supports audio capture through digital tropical or 3.5mm inputs and has USB-C ports for charging, data transfer and webcam/streaming as well as headphone input. Unfortunately, the HDMI port is a small and fragile micro HDMI type.
To achieve its capabilities, the Nikon ZR looks like an amazing bargain. it Starting at $2,200 For bodies without accessories, that’s half the price of the Sony FX3, and $1,700 cheaper than the Canon C50. Shipping is expected to begin on October 20, 2025. It supports any Nikon (or third-party) Z Mount Lens or F Mount Glass with an adapter.
