At least 50 transport containers slipped away from the Long Beach port Tuesday morning, and officials scrambled to determine what was going on.
The ship, Mississippi, was moored at the G terminal before 9 a.m. when the container mysteriously fell into the water, port spokesman Art Marroquin said.
Marroquin and other port officials did not answer questions about the ship. However, they confirmed that no injuries were reported and all operations were temporarily suspended as responders worked to ensure the containers worked.
Port officials are in the initial stages of investigating the cause of the incident.
An online website Mississippi, under the Portuguese flag, was docked in China two weeks ago, said the ship.
The incident occurred only four days after the port was named Best West Coast Harbours in North America Trade publication Asia Goods News for the seventh consecutive year.
