California’s top law enforcement officials weighed on Monday’s controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling on immigration enforcement.
Atti. General Rob Bonta condemned the decision, which was a stop for immigration agents and questioned people’s paths they suspected of illegally based on information such as race or employment in the United States.
Speaking at a press conference in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, Bonta said he agreed with the ACLU’s claims in the lawsuit against the Trump administration. He claimed the promiscuous tactics used to make immigration arrests violated the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits searches and seizures.
Bonta said he believes “for ice sheet agents, federal immigration officials, use race, unable to speak English, location or perceived profession to stop, detain, search, catch Californians.”
He also condemned what he said was the Supreme Court’s growing reliance on emergency cases, which he said often obscured the justice’s decisions.
“It’s disappointing,” he said. “And the emergencies are being used more and more. Often you don’t know who votes. There is no argument. There is no written opinion.”
Bonta called Brett M. Kavanaugh’s opinion “very disturbing.”
Trump designated justice believes that doing such work may be useful because many people who work day labor in areas such as construction or agriculture, which is to help immigration agents determine who to stop.
Bonta said the practice made “there is potential discrimination in the use of race,” he said. “It’s disturbing and disturbing.”
