Although China has significantly surpassed the U.S. when it was building ships, the Labor Department will announce the availability of $8 million in funding for an international scholarship program on Thursday that will allow U.S. agencies and foreign agencies to correct the differences.
According to the Labor Department, the four-year proposed program will work with U.S. training centers, registered apprenticeship programs and educational institutions, such as community colleges with foreign training centers, and shipyards in Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan, South Korea and other countries, providing advanced shipbuilding skills to American workers.

“Finding close collaboration with our allies will promote the Department of Labor’s mission to create an effective shipbuilding apprenticeship program here in the United States,” Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer said in a statement to Fox News Digital Digitalization. “President Trump restores U.S. maritime dominance by preparing our workforce to compete with China and strengthening our national security.”

It also directed the agencies to develop a plan of maritime action and ordered the U.S. Trade Representative to compile a recommendation to address China’s “anti-competitive action within the shipbuilding industry.”
According to the Labor Department, the new scholarship program originated from Trump’s executive order.
Those eligible for funding opportunities include any business, international, educational or nonprofit organization, including faith-based, community-based or public international groups.
The application deadline is September 26.
