City and state police and the FBI Boston are investigating a video that appears to show people holding guns near the University of Massachusetts campus sharing Wednesday afternoon on social media app Yik Yak.
The video appears to show a man walking on the sidewalk with a gun.
The university requires students and faculty to be protected in place.

The FBI Boston said it is on site and coordinated with law enforcement partners.
“We encourage the public to stay alert and avoid the area,” FBI Boston shared in an X post.
Massachusetts police said it knew the video and responded to the area.
“We know of a video circulating by an armed person who appears to be walking in Lowell near the Riverview Suite on Middlesex Street,” the state police wrote in a social media post. “State and local police have responded to the area for further investigation. Anyone with relevant information should call 911.”

The Lowell Police Department said police activity increased in Middlesex Street, Patuket Street and Broadway Street.
D-Mass. Rep. Lori Trahan said she is actively monitoring the situation and keeping in touch with local officials.
Trahan wrote in the X post: “If you are in Lowell, follow the instructions from @LowellPD and @umasslowell.”

University of Massachusetts Lowell University is a public research university located about 40 miles north of Boston.
The Lowell Police Department did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News numbers.
The FBI Boston declined to comment further on the investigation.
