Steve Kerr dons Harvard shirt in response to Trump’s federal funding freeze: ‘Stand up to the bully’

Trump administration announced on Monday Freeze $2.2 billion University President Alan M. Garber announced the same day that the school did not comply with the Trump administration’s demands against anti-Semitism, in Harvard’s multi-year grants and contracts.

In response, Golden State Warriors Head coach Steve Kerr wore a Harvard basketball shirt to attend a press conference Tuesday night.

“What happened?” he asked jokingly, laughing from the media.

“[Harvard coach] Tommy Amaker is my friend. He sent me the shirt and it felt like a good day to wear it,” Kerr added. “I believe in academic freedom. I think it is crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their business the way they want and should not be shaken by our government and tell them what to teach or say. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, but now it’s a course. This is what I support Harvard University.

“The way you walk, stand up.”

Kerr’s father, Malcolm, was a professor in the Middle East and was assassinated in 1984, and he has long opposed Trump. Kerr acknowledged Kamala Harris for the 2024 election.

Kerr talked to reporters after the Warriors beat the Memphis Grizzlies in the game to win the seventh seed in the Western Conference.

Garber said the federal government threatened to establish partnerships with several universities, including Harvard, to accuse anti-Semitism on campus. He also noted that the Trump administration has released an updated and expanded list of requirements, saying that schools plan to maintain financial relations with the federal government and must comply.

Earlier this month, a federal anti-Semitism task force announced a review of Harvard’s federal grants and contracts worth nearly $9 billion as the university faces an investigation into anti-Semitism on campus.
